Pam
A painting and mixed media artist using natural and synthetic materials as a form of self-expression and creativity.
Bio: Originally from Mauritius, I have lived in the Uk since childhood. Educated in London and in Yorkshire, I acquired my BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Leeds Polytechnic (1989-1992), specialising in the field of sculpture, performing arts and photography. I obtained my MA in Art Psychotherapy at Goldsmiths University (2020-2023), making and creating art, underpinned by psychodynamic and psycho analytical theories. Currently based in Southampton, my art practice reflects my ongoing professional art psychodynamic training combined with existential and philosophical thinking related to social and political issues around identity, gender, and culture.
Influences: My practice is based on past and present memories, thoughts and feelings captured in ‘found’ and ‘natural materials’. It is an exploration of my experiences of urban and suburban environments, reflected in the visual landscape, with a curiosity in the investigation of that which is ‘seen and unseen’. Through the process of art making, my current art practice is an enquiry into the ‘in between spaces that we occupy’ and its ‘similarities and differences’. It is the ambiguous feelings and tensions that lie between these different entities and their relationship with the external world, such as night and day, earth and sky, land and sea and the ‘reverie’ that exists between these elements. Influenced by anthropology combined with phenomenology, my art practice is an exploration of my conscious and subconscious feelings, within the process of artmaking, thinking and creativity, with a focus on diaspora, migration and embodiment. It is a dynamic force exploring my inner and outer world, my somatic movements and feelings and how I perceive, respond and connect to objects within a given space and time.
